Personal Design Statement - Mathew Hull

I am an innovative landscape designer currently studying on the BSc (Hons) Landscape and Garden Design course at Writtle School of Design. I enjoy the thrill of creating vibrant spaces that people can take great pleasure from interacting with.

My design process generally revolves around my thoughts of how a person will feel in a space combined with observations of an area’s idiom to create a design that integrates smoothly into the surrounding context. From this, I then look for inspiration from a range of sources to discover the best way to activate the space in question. My inspirations are varied and come from a number of different places, often outside the landscape design field. I believe that the incorporation of appealing planting schemes are a fundamental component to the majority of exterior spaces and this is something I like to explore. Plants add a layer of controlled unpredictability to a space which stops it becoming lacklustre.

I am a thoughtful designer who thinks about the effects my pencil marks will have on the landscape and how it will affect the sites existing layers. I am relishing the chance to be able to create spaces on the planet that people enjoy, feel comfortable in and are inspired by.
