GOSH Friends rooftop garden (Spacelab, 2010) |
The portfolio section of Andy Sturgeon’s website highlights the range of work the company are capable of. Designs for roof gardens and town gardens occupy the largest spaces on the website and show what the company enjoy working on most. Designs are sleek, stylish and original and fulfil the design philosophy in every case. Creative new ideas that push the boundaries of outdoor design are often implemented, hence why the detailing stage of a design by Sturgeon often takes quite a while as he frequently implements bespoke features (Garden Design Journal, 2011).
A space for relaxation and contemplation (Spacelab, 2010) |
Other than the many show gardens Sturgeon has created, the design that has received the best reviews is the Friends Garden for Great Ormond Street Hospital. This roof garden was created to give a space in the hospital where members of staff are able to escape the demands of patients during breaks enabling them to get some rest/contemplation time (Landscape Institute, 2008). The design of the garden allows people to spend time alone or in groups in specially divided spaces that give great views across London.
This design, as with all of Sturgeon’s others, follows the companies design philosophies but this time without the use of ‘innovative planting’. Sturgeon has been criticised for covering up a design with the introduction of numerous plants, but this design shows the thoughtful spaces that Sturgeon is able to produce.
